the country in new jersey where voters head to the polls, governor chris christie will win reelection. the latest quinnipiac poll has him up over two to one over barba barbara buono. christie and his supporters hope to show the republican party how to win an election. we caught up with governor cristy on the campaign trail over the weekend and asked him what will likely be his victory speech on tuesday. >> sounds like you're planning for a message beyond new jersey. is that a fair assessment? >> i'm not planning for it. i think it's inevitable. people look at elections and they try to discern about what they mean at that moment and what they mean for the future. i think that what people will see is so unusual for what our party has created in the last couple of years that invariably people will draw from us. >> is the margin necessary to lay a future for your career? >> i don't think so. barack obama won the state by 17 points a year ago. the fact that you're talking to a republican about margin rather than can you win or. >> really good thing to have. >> at this stage you look at chr

orchestrated by an even less popular and highly divided republican party. the political fates of chris christie in new jersey and ken cuccinelli in virginia, the two republicans in the running have a lot to tell us about just what kind of republican can get elected these days. now, on the one hand, you have christie, who, if recent polls showing him clobbering his democratic opponent, barbara what's her name by a 19-point margin are any indication, it's the kind who wins elections. correction, the kind of republican who can win elections in a blue state that gave president obama 58% of the vote in 2012. now, on paper, chris christie is as conservative as they come. opposition to reproductive rights? check. he defunded planned parenthood and refused to fund new jersey state family planning centers. standing strong against marriage equality? check. he recently backed down from his efforts to block same-sex marriage from moving the forward in new jersey, but only after a long, long fight to keep it from happening. advancing economic austerity policies, check. opposing organized labor, check. suppr
eyebrows about why new jersey governor chris christie is campaigning so aggressively just days before a voet he's got locked up. christie's still on the move. nbc's kelly o'donnell is on the move as well, having interviewed christie on the road. she joins us in hamilton, new jersey. a good sunday to you. what is behind this tour? >> reporter: well, we've been traveling with the governor, talking to him along the way. he says the polls could do him a disservice because voters actually have to get there on election day and cast ballots. so he says he is trying to grind it out, push from town to town to connect with voters, to make sure they actually turn out. there's also the issue of how big of a margin might he have if he is, in fact, going to win, how big a win. and i talked to him about that last night. >> i'm not planning for it. i just think it's inevitable. you know, i think people look at elections and try to discern things from them about what they mean at that moment and what they mean for the future. i think that what people are going to see is so unusual for what our party h

on tuesday, chris christie versus barbara buono. even though this week he admitted publicly he will not promise to actually serve out his term as governor. so his closing argument now is effectively, elect me even though i don't totally want the job and i can't say i won't quit half way through. still, though, the governor was up by 33 points in the most recent poll. the one interesting thing to watch in new jersey is if that big margin holds on election day, what are the down ballot consequences be of that in the state? new jersey democrats have an eight-seat majority in the senate. republicans are hoping that if christie wins big on tuesday that might have pro-republican consequences down the ballot in the state senate to whittle away at the democrats' majority. the senate is also the thing in washington state where a race for one specific senate seat is turning out to be fascinatingly expensive. republicans right now in washington control the state senate but it's really close and their control is only possible thanks to a couple of people crossing party lines to caucus with
